Since day one of elementary school classes were always divided into cultures.  There were those students who were considered “nerds” and then those that were considered “normal”.  C.P snow states how the school system creates the problems of “two cultures”.  Everyday at UCLA confirms snow’s beliefs. The North and South campus of UCLA are their own cultures.  North campus students are the literary intellectuals that snow discusses while south campus students are the scientists. North campus is even designed as more artsy while south campus is more technological and modern feel.  South campus students have the label as those who are less social and they keep to themselves.  The groups are never forced to communicate which makes the gap between the two groups greater.

However I do not feel the affect of the north/south campus major cultures, I still am on the fence about which culture is fit for me. I work as the UCLA baseball manager, since most of my time is spent at the field I see a different culture each day.  I experience the UCLA baseball culture but at the same time I experience the UCLA student culture.  Although baseball and being a student have nothing in common they are extremely similar. I am able to use things I learn from the coaching staff to better myself overall.

The UCLA baseball culture shows up in my life more than any other culture.  I believe that it has made me a better person.  As a student it has taught me to manage my time correctly and at the same time use that time more efficiently.  As a person UCLA baseball has changed me, I have become extremely hard working which can only help me in the future.

  1. It makes me sad at UCLA does not do more to meld the two cultures of "North" and "South" campus. I agree that there is even a stark contrast in the architecture (I personally find North Campus more cheerful and less depressing than the South). There shouldn't be a dividing line as we all can learn so much from each other.

  2. Hi Derek,

I would have been interested to hear more about the many different "cultures" you mentioned at the beginning of your post. I also would have liked to hear more about how exactly baseball has shaped who you are. How is it the same or different than other cultures on campus? Do you maybe have any thoughts on how to make the two halves of campus communicate more?
